Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh in 1850 and qualified as a lawyer in 1875. He was determined to be a writer, however, and his fascination with predestination and the presence of evil is evident in his best-known story, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Among his other works are Kidnapped and Treasure Island. This story appeared in the collection The Suicide Club.
