Book description
This volume contains four plays by Sophocles (496-406 B.C.), who was the first to give to ancient Greek drama a structure recognizably related to its modern descendant. In Electra he objectively presents part of the Orestean legend, while Women of Trachis is remarkable for the human verisimilitude imparted to a near-repulsive piece of mythology. Philoctetes portrays the strugglers of right against might, and Ajax takes for its theme that of the great man fallen.
