Each scholarly essay provides the reader an overview of particular developments within the medieval period as a whole. For instance, A. Hartshorne’s essay on civil costume discusses costumes from the Anglo-Saxon, Norman and Plantagenet periods to the Tudor age, and that on art by G. Rushforth from Anglo-Saxon art to the influence of the Italian Renaissance.
