Book description

Ediide by Thomas Hutchinson, revised by Ernest de Selincourt.

This edition of Wordsworth’s poems contains every piece of verse known to have been published by the poet himself, or of which he authorized the posthumous publication. The text, which Thomas Hutchinson based largely upon the 1849-50 standard edition, the last issued during the poet’s lifetime, was revised in 1936 for the Oxford Standard Authors series by Ernest de Selincourt.

The volume preserves the poet’s famous subjective arrangement of the Minor Poems under such headings as "Poems Referring to the Period of Childhood", "Poems Dedicated to National Independence and Liberty", and "Sonnets Upon the Punishment of Death". The Prelude is given in the text of 1850, published shortly after Wordsworth’s death, and The Excursion as it appears in the 1849-50 edition. Two poems of 1793 are included. An Evening Walk and Descriptive Sketches, and a group of other pieces not appearing in the standard edition. The text reproduces Wordsworth’s characteristic use of capital letters and in most cases his punctuation, though spelling has been regularized. The poet’s own Notes to the 1849-50 edition, as well as to some earlier editions are reprinted, along with his Prefaces.

The edition also contains a chronological table of Wordsworth’s life, explanatory notes on the text, and chronological data for the individual poems.
