After the death of her mother in 1887 Jenny Fitzgerald leaves her poor home in London for her grandparents’ Oxfordshire village inn. Enchanted by her new life, she soon falls in love with Roger Leyton, a gentleman farmer’s son.
After her grandmother’s death, they marry and take over the Ring of Bells themselves and eventually expand their business into a successful hotel group. Life isn’t easy, however, as they live through the First World War, with two of their children and their son-in-law away at the front. And then they have to learn to cope with the changed world that follows.
