Josie Jenkins and Daisy Buckland seem destined to be friends. Daisy is a young war widow while Josie’s husband is serving abroad in North Africa. Each girl recognizes in the other a strong, determined personality, and an ambitious streak that will not be denied.

          Daisy has returned to her native Swansea and resumed her career as a midwife while she awaits the birth of her own child, and Josie is full of admiration for the other girl’s spirit. Her own aim in life is to create a scure, respectable home for herself and Stan – and to distance herself from the notoriety of her drunken bullyin father, Reuben.
