Sociology for Everyone is an introductory textbook for students who have noe previous experience of sociology. It is also intended to help directly all those who are taking introductory sociology on a range of vocational courses – the Institute of Personnel Management, BEC, health visiting, nursing, architecture, town planning, teaching and all those other courses that include an element of sociology.

          By looking at what we frequently take for granted – our common assumptions – this book approaches its subject in a wholly novel way. The structure of each chapter comprises an introduction to a particular topic and an exploration of a number of common assumptions about that subject. These assumptions are then subjected to searching criticism in light of the theoretical and empirical findings of sociology. Each chapter concludes with a set of self-examining questions, discussion topics, projects and suggested further reading.

          Throughout the book there is emphasis on "doing sociology" – the book invites active participation rather than passive assimilation of material.
