This book is an impression of the history and topography of Sussex. The topography is entirely personal, for I felt it was better to write of those parts of Sussex I knew really well, than to attemot to give, from other people’s books, or from cursory visits, an account of the whole county. Guide-books provide all that kind of information. The thing I have tried to do is to give some of the reasons why Sussex is different from her neighbouring counties, and was for long a "secret kingdom".
