Book description

The Shell Guide to England, first published in 1970, is one of the outstanding guide-books of our time. Written by a team of noted authorities on many aspects of the English scene, it has come to be ragarded as an indispensable companion for travellers, tourists, holidaymakers and weekend motorists. It has already sold well over half a million copies.

This edition follows the same pattern as the original, and includes all the general essays on the farming scene, townscapes, the village and the country house, churches and cathedrals, rivers, woodlands, mountains and moorland, the industrial heritage, the English garden and the architectural follies. Here, too, are illumintaing introductory studies – all written by recognized authorities – on the eleven regions into which the country is divided. Without altering the freshness and perception of the original approach, everything has been brought up to date and much of the text is completely new. All the gazetteer entries numbering over 2350 have been checked and verified in the light of changes that have occurred during the last eleven years – not merely the establishment of new county boundaries, but new building and farming developments, the construction of new motorways, the growth of the National Trust and National Parks, and the opening of many more stately homes and gardens to the public.

This edition is illustrated with 32 colour plates, and over 200 photographic black-and-white illustrations, many of which are new to this edition.
