Book description
Clothes changed a lot between the years 1600 and 1800. At the beginning of the period people were still affected by the idea that people in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I had that clothes and jewellery reflected a person’s importance. Gradually flashy, extravagant fashions gave way to elegance, then to the severe clothes of the time of Oliver Cromwell, the 1650s. The rather tasteless clothes covered with trimmings of the early years of Charles II’s reign, the 1660s, were a reaction against this. Then dress became plainer, although the materials were still very rich.
