Book description

Waite chronicles his years as a hostage in Beirut by starting from the day he was taken and following his thoughts and actions until the day he was released. The text moves from the agonizing events of the time, to thoughts on his childhood and his family, to reflections on how he got to be where he was–in a dark, damp place in a strange, angry land–and how he would be able to survive what became nearly four years of solitary confinement.

Ironically, Waite’s abduction was a result of his attempt to meet with those who were already hostages–one of whom was Terry Anderson, journalist and author of "Den of Lions". It was Waite’s profession to aid religious and state leaders in their dealings with their own people and with other often hostile countries; trying to free hostages was his latest specialty. Waite writes engagingly, though sometimes his overdramatic prose undermines the real-life drama. Patrons will find that reading this book alongside Anderson’s gives two diverse, yet menacingly similar tales.
