Quntin McGarel Hogg was born in 1907, son of the first Viscount Hailsham, and after being educated at Eton became a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. he first trained as a philosopher but rejected that as a profession in favour of law, becoming a Barrister of Lincoln’s Inn in 1932, a Bencher in 1956 and Treasurer in 1975.
He was a Member of Parliament 1938-50, and a member of the House of Lords 1950-63. In that year he disclaimed the title of second Viscount Hailsham, re-entering the House of Commons until 1970, when he was created a Life Peer.
Lord Haisham has led a very distinguished legal and political career, having been Leader of both Houses of Parliament, Lord Privy Seal and Lord Chancellor. Ha has also headed the Conservative Party organization. He has twice been Minister of Education and the first Minister of Science so distinguished himself as to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
