They illustrate the extent to which Scott Fitzgerald consciously saw himself as the pacemaker in a manic-depressive age. Writing from the safety of the thirties he looks back nostalgically at the Jazz Age, when elderly ex-officers in their mid-twenties too command of a younger generation deprived of war, and the old guard fought back with prohibition. But the boom of Early Success already contains the seeds of the crash and depression of The Crack-Up.
