Book description
Mrs Bennett’s Four Metaphysical Poets – Donne, Herbert, Vaughan and Crashaw – is now being reissued under a new title with an additional chapter on Andrew Marvell. In hesr study Mrs Bennett has analysed, emphasized and illustrated the qualities of metaphysical poetry in general, and the peculiarities of the individual poets. She shows that, if we retain the word "metaphysiacl" as a label for a poetic tradition, it is as appropriate to Marvell as it is to Vaughan, and more so than to Crashaw. In particular, Mrs Bennett brings out very clearly the real nature of the connection between the earlier love-poetry of Donne and his later religious poetry.
